Open windows and a series of fans kept us cool and made sleep possible last night. It was only 28 degrees yesterday but the forecast of 40 degrees later in the week does not bode well for us! Betty planned to spend the morning acclimatizing while Laurel and I were to return the rental car to the airport. We could keep the car until noon, so we hit the road early and looked for adventure on the way. The Four Chateaus of Lastours (a ruined Cathar Castle) was our first stop. Although entrance was closed on Sunday until late morning, we hiked the neighbouring hill for a viewpoint. Next on our itinerary was the Saissac Castle, another Cathar stronghold. From there we wended our way back to Carcassone airport, stopping in Montolieu, known as “the book village” because of its abundance of book stores.
Back home, we hooked up with Betty and had lunch, then headed out into the blazing sun to check out the “Cité,” the gigantic, imposing double walled fortress with 52 towers that overlooks Carcassonne. We circumnavigated the entire complex, sticking to the shaded sections of the outside of the inner wall (2 kms). Inside the Cité, the crowds were thick and so we agreed to only stay for a cold drink of water and return tomorrow in the morning to tour the complex.
Back home we went into siesta mode and stayed there until supper time. Our meal plans, however, were undermined by Sunday store hours such that we found ourselves unable to shop and therefore stuck with an odd assortment of ingredients on hand in our apartment. After what resembled an episode of “Chopped,” we sat down to a delicious meal of raw veggies, lentil salad, and bacon and egg pasta.
An evening walk in search of ice cream allowed us to clock a few more kms before bed.
