July 10 — Getaria

THEMES OF TODAY:  the beach at Zumaia (stunning!) & fresh fish caught in Getaria waters (delicious!)

In the early a.m., we hiked along the “Camino del Norte” route from Getaria to the next town along the coast — Zumaia.  It was a nice feeling to once again follow the familiar yellow arrows of the Spanish Camino!  Along with a few peregrinos, we wended our way through pretty green countryside, past vineyards, farms, and one sleepy village with the usual old stone church, until we reached Zumaia and refreshed ourselves with a coffee break.  Then just a short walk through a passageway, and we found ourselves on a most beautiful beach — blue water, white waves, soft clean sand, sun, surfers, and strikingly striped high cliffs as a backdrop to the beach!  Jim bodysurfed, while Betty and I waded in.  Itzurun (also known as Flysch Beach) is of interest to geologists because it is situated among the longest set of continuous rock strata in the world. Known locally as the ”flysh," they date from the mid-cretaceous period to the present, a time period of over 100 million years.  After our swim, we hiked along the top of the ridge above the beach, to take in another spectacular view of the cliffs, beach, and sea and to pass by the old San Telmo Church, dedicated to sailors.  A short bus ride back to Getaria completed our perfect morning.

We had read about the abundant fresh fish cooked on grills outside restaurants in Getaria, and our tastebuds had been watering to try it ever since we arrived — we got our chance today at lunchtime and we were not disappointed!  Delicious!
Afterward, we stopped in at a fresh fish market at the port, across the street from the restaurant, and bought a piece of fresh hake — fish tacos for supper in our apartment.  Again, delicious!
An evening stroll up San Anton hill, jutting out from Getaria into the sea, was our final outing of the day.
